IT’S been almost two years now since I began sharing the
Sticky round with Patrick Donovan. This year, we also
welcomed Tessie Vanderwert to the fold for occasional
contributions. We’ll reveal Tessie’s 10 favorite albums of 2007
today. First up, here’s how one half of Sticky saw the
year.
It’s rare to declare that you have witnessed your favorite gig
of the year in January. That happened to me walking out of the
Killers’ show at Festival Hall almost 11 months ago. Having met the
mild-mannered Brandon Flowers hours before backstage, we saw a
different person strut on stage. The band launched into the title
track from their album Sam’s Town, and the crowd sang every
single word thereafter back at him. The second encore, which
featured Flowers sitting by himself on stage singing
Exitlude was one of the only times the hairs on the back of
my neck stood up at a gig this year.
There were plenty of good gigs this year, and just as many
ordinary ones.
The year began for me in Lorne at Falls. My endearing memory:
Joey Johns embracing Tim Rogers backstage. You Am I joined
Wolfmother after midnight for a cover of Baba O’Riley. A few
weeks later, I was at Festival Hall for probably the worst gig I
saw in 2007: Tenacious D. One joke over 90 minutes in sweltering
conditions does not make for a fun night. Better value were the
Pretenders at the Prince.
Australia Day was Kiss My Grass, a locals-only dance
party at the Myer Music Bowl. Patriotism was the order of the day:
the Aussie flag became a skirt, shorts, shirt, balaclava, bandanna,
wristband and even a hair-piece. The Big Day Out had its second and
final run at Princes Park. We wait with trepidation for its return
to Flemington.
The Scissor Sisters attempted to move Vodafone Arena from its
usual sterile state. They almost succeeded, too. The St Jerome’s
Laneway Festival had its last year amid the rubbish bins in
Caledonian Lane. year, it will annex a block of Lonsdale
Street.

The ‘Spider-Man’ actress will take over from Lindsay Lohan - who fronted the spring/summer 2007 campaign - and star in the fashion house’s adverts for spring/summer 2008.
A source said: “Kirsten just wrapped a photoshoot for Miu Miu’s new range in Los Angeles with fashion photographers Mert and Marcus.”
Previous faces of the Prada clothing line - headed by Miuccia Prada whose nickname is Miu Miu - include Kim Basinger and Chinese actress Zhou Xun.
Earlier this year, Kirsten, 25, caused controversy by saying she believes the world would be a “better place” if more people smoked marijuana.
The ‘Virgin Suicides’ star said: “I drink moderately, I’ve tried drugs. I do like weed. I have a different outlook on marijuana than America does.
“I’ve never been a major smoker, but I think America’s view on weed is ridiculous. I mean - are you kidding me? If everyone smoked weed, the world would be a better place.”

Bring It On 4: In It to Win It DVD Review

Fourth Installment of Cheerleading Franchise Out on DVD
Seven years ago, Bring It On was the sleeper hit of the summer which kickstarted the careers of a couple of relatively-unknown actresses, Gabrielle Union and Kirsten Dunst. The pair squared-off as the captains their high school cheerleading teams, one, all-black and hailing from the ‘hood, the other, lily-white and located in the suburbs.

The film worked by creating a palpable tension between credible characters caught up in a realistic across the tracks drama. And although neither Union nor Dunst would reprise her role, the original was parlayed into a franchise which is presently releasing its third sequel on DVD.

Sadly, this installment is a pathetic rip-off which bears virtually no resemblance to the first, except that it revolves around cheerleading. It actually might have been better titled West Side Story 2, since the two squads have been renamed the Jets and the Sharks, and a boy from the former falls in love with a girl from the latter.

Strangely, despite the fact that during Bring It On 2 the kids entered college, they are somehow back in high school again, here. More curiously, the lead black character has been reduced to a one-dimensional, support role as a stereotypical sassy sister leveling threats like: “I will slice you like government cheese.”

Worse, she boasts about participating in drive-by shootings since she was a child. Then, worst of all, during the denouement, she reveals that she’s “been ‘hood ratting it up” because she’s “really an Oreo, black on the outside, but white on the inside.”

At this juncture, she is offered a shoulder to lean on by her suddenly-sympathetic, patronizing blonde adversary, who advises: “If you want respect that badly, just be a bitch.” I’m not even sure exactly what that is supposed to mean.

The real question is how long will African-American females continue to …

Drop Dead Gorgeous (3-5 p.m., COM) - A satire about a teen beauty pageant - Isn't that redundant? This comedy of killer babes who would kill for the tiara stars Denise Richards and Kirsten Dunst as the contestants, and Kirstie Alley and Ellen Barkin as their moms, a Midwestern hypocrite and a trailer-trash trollop.
NFL Legends: Brady, Manning, Favre (5-6 p.m., 6ABC) - NFL fans have had the privilege of watching three all-time great players perform in the same era, and they're still going strong. This NFL Films special highlights the lifelong road that the Indianapolis Colts' Peyton Manning, the New England Patriots' Tom Brady, and the Green Bay Packers' Brett Favre have traveled to the top of their profession, and includes interviews with all three, their families and their teammates.
Snowglobe (8-10 p.m., FAM) - If you've ever lamented the fact that your family is nothing like a Norman Rockwell painting, especially around the holidays, you'll feel Angela's (Christina Milian) pain. The heroine of this new fantasy, she comes into possession of a magical snow globe and is transported into the perfect happy-holiday world within. But you just know a lesson about what's really important is coming.
Dreamgirls (8-10 p.m., HBO) - It took a long time to reach the screen, but writer-director Bill Condon's adaptation was worth the wait. Beyonce Knowles has her best film role yet as the central vocalist in a 1960s girl group, and Jamie Foxx also does sterling work as their manager. Still, the cast standouts are Murphy as a soul-music superstar and Jennifer Hudson, the American Idol veteran who earned an Oscar for the film.

The 2008 Sundance Film Festival lineup, or 13 reasons to visit …

December 14th, 2007 by lisa

I have a really long to-do list in a notebook somewhere. I call it my things-to-do-before-I-croak list. It includes stuff like places I want to see, books I want to read and things I’d like to accomplish. Thanks to AfterEllen.com, I can sort of cross off one of those items. No. 67: Get published. Sure, the Internet wasn’t what I had in mind when I added that particular item to my list, but it counts in my world.

Another thing on my to-do list is attend the Sundance Film Festival. If I could manage to squeeze in the time off and barter my way to Utah, I’d make 2008 the year to get that one crossed off the list. The complete list of films screening at next year’s festival was released over the course of the past couple of weeks. Not only do some of the films sound intriguing, but the list of who’s in those films should make the red carpet a true treat. In last week’s Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. we told you about one reason to head for the Utah mountains, a reason named Saffron Burrows. Here are a few more reasons to make the trek.

One of the people I would expect to see strutting about town is Lena Headey. Not only would I love to drool over her in person, but I’d also like to see the movie she’s in that’s screening at Park City at Midnight. It’s called The Broken and tells the tale of a woman who sees herself drive by in her own car while on a busy London street. She follows the mystery double into "a living nightmare." Lena Headey in what sounds like an eerie psychological thriller? Count me in.

Kirsten Dunst will likely be there as well, along with Winona Ryder. Dunst directed one of the short films being screened in competition. The film is called Welcome and stars Ryder, who’s got not one but two films on the Sundance screening list.

The Year of Getting to Know Us, a film about a man afraid of commitment starring Jimmy Fallon, is getting its world premiere at Sundance. What’s so special about a movie …

Hammer Horror returns

Thirty years ago, it was a byword for gore, suspense and over-acting. Now the
Hammer House of Horror is open for business again, exclusively online, writes
Hannah Strange.

Beyond the Rave, the first horror movie made by Hammer Films since 1976, will
be released not in cinemas but through MySpace, the world’s biggest social
networking site, on which it will be streamed in episodes next spring before
being released on DVD.

The studio said that Beyond the Rave would contain all the ingredients of a
Hammer classic: “vampires, blood, death and suspense throughout”, but, as
the name suggests, with a 21st century twist.

Hammer’s resurrection follows its takeover earlier this year by a consortium
led by John De Mol, the Dutch producer behind Endemol and creator of Big
Brother. The new owners have promised to plough £25 million into a new
generation of films for horror lovers via the web and mobile phones.

Featuring Sadie Frost, arguably the perfect choice for a breathy Hammer Horror
heroine, the film is a UK co-production with MySpace, which is owned by News
Corporation, parent company of Times Online.

Celebrated for 1950s horror movies such as The Curse of Frankenstein and
Dracula, Hammer Films launched in 1934 and became one of the best known
British film companies in the 20th century, elevating actors such as Peter
Cushing and Christopher Lee to worldwide fame.

This latest venture aims to refashion the genre for a modern audience using a
host of up-to-the-minute technologies, according to Simon Oakes, Hammer Film
Productions chairman and chief executive.

“When Hammer Films first started, it was an innovative production company and
this new venture marks the beginning of a journey to recalibrate the DNA of
Hammer Films for a new audience,” he said.

“To relaunch MySpaceTV’s first UK co-production is perfect for a company
originally born out of a culture of …
